Policy

Plain-English definition and practical context.

Definition: Policy | (SFIP)

pronunciation: pol-uh-see

In flood insurance, a policy is the entire written contract between the insured and the insurance provider that establishes flood coverage for a specific property and policy term.

Under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), the policy includes all of the following components together:

  • The Standard Flood Insurance Policy (SFIP) form

  • The Declaration Page, which lists coverage limits, deductibles, premium, and policy period

  • Any endorsements or amendments issued during the policy term

  • Any renewal documentation that continues coverage into a new term

All of these documents must be read together. No single page or form stands alone. Coverage applies only as described within the policy and is subject to its terms, conditions, exclusions, and limitations.

Because flood insurance is governed by federal regulation, NFIP policy language is standardized nationwide and cannot be altered by agents, insurers, or insureds.
